Description
Macbeth
The setting is Scotland, where Macbeth, the tragic hero of the play, changes from a brave general in the army, who heroically defeats the Norwegians, to a bloodthirsty tyrant. Back from the battlefield, three witches put temptation in his way, prophesying his future access to the Scottish throne, and Lady Macbeth fuels his blind ambition for power. Thus, he indulges in treacherous acts and dreadful crimes, first committing regicide to usurp King Duncan’s throne and then eliminating any potential source of threat to his kingship. The Tragedy of Macbeth is believed to have been written in 1606, to become one of William Shakespeare’s (1564 – 1616) most widelyknown works. Obeying the rules of classical tragedy, this fiveact play ends with the death of the protagonist. Ultimately, Prince Malcolm is hailed as the rightful heir to the Scottish throne, thus restoring the traditional coronation procedures, along with stability, order and loyalty.
